These instruments have an air column made up with bamboo, wood or metal to which there are holes for producing notes. The wind instruments includes Shankh, shehnai, harmonium etc.

* AvanaddhaVadya: Membrane covered. The instruments that are considered as membrane covered instruments are damaru, dhol, nagadamadudrum,tavil etc. Basically Avanaddha means to cover or to conceal. These instruments have a box with covering of skin. “BhoomiDundudhi” is one of the ancient Indian Musical Instrument of such kind.

* Ghana Vadya: Solid Precussion Instruments. Ghana means solid so the instrument which were solid in state not hollow in shape were considered in this category. It includes tall, Ghanta, ghunghroo, Kabas, etc.
